TRUMP: COME FOR THE SHOW, STAY FOR THE RACISM The rift between Trumpers and progressives began in 2015, when Donald J. Trump engaged his campaign for president in earnest, back when few took him seriously. Rational people largely thought his bloated float down a golden elevator was a joke until the other republican candidates (which of course trump was not) began to skulk away like beaten puppies in reaction to his childish tweet-whippings. Which we also laughed at. How can a person win an election, or rule a country, by tweeting insane bullshit 24/7, we assured ourselves. But that is the first frightening Trumpism we learned to accept: if you repeat something enough times, even if it is an easily provable lie, people will believe it. And we now know that after eight years, there was an unfathomably large group of rednecks who were ripe for the come-uppance for sane liberal leadership by a smart black man.
